About the Artist Portfolios

Artist's Statement

My fascination with the industrial landscape began when I was a child living in a small industrial town, where I explored the hollowed out remains of factories and warehouses. Today I find myself seeking out these same environments that evoke the emotional power of these early experiences. The structures continue to hold the same mystery and haunting presence as they did when I was a child, but now in my photographs they allude more to film sets fallen into disuse. The distinctions of time have been blurred as they move further from the present into the past. They are defiant and isolated as they sit in the lunar light levaing images more at home in the subconscious.

Five years ago while traveling through the Italian landscape, I began experimenting with blurred imagery. As a passive passenger, I found myself making up narratives as the landscapes streamed by. The resulting photographs collapsed space by removing contours, contrast, and perspective and, as a result, created a more subtle layering of light and shadow, color and luminosity. Upon re-examining the images printed, I realized that unlike my other photographs these were of places I had never been, spaces I had never occupied. The photographs suggest space without describing it. Out-of-focus photographs become more about the act of perception and interpretation than a literal reading of the visual elements. What emerges out of the blur is not fixed and remains in a constant state of appearing. The images are more about the viewer than the viewed.
