Artist's Statement Forever, artists have given each other some simple but valuable advice,... "Stay with what you care about." From plein aire painting in school to the view-camera my photography professor introduced me to, I've been involved with the landscape. Converting it to forms and patterns that reveal the nature of the object. Simplifying the complex, the tangled, and the overgrown into an image that speaks through and beyond the chaos. I'm trying to broaden the expressive range of the way I see the familiar... once again and again, the intricacies of a freshly spun spider-web or a fog-covered grove of trees at the horizon. In addition to the 4x5, I've been working with the Hasselblad, exploring the advantages of the physical spontaneity afforded me, finding new ways of seeing images I have previously studied. All of my images are printed in the classical tradition of black and white photography; full frame with no extraordinary dark room or chemical manipulation. For me, photography is a way to be heard, with visual words, plainspoken but with all the eloquence I can muster. |
